Cybersecurity Trends: Emerging Threats and Technologies in the Cybersecurity Landscape

E&ICTA17 March 2025

Today businesses of every size, corporates, and even governments rely on computerised systems to manage their daily activities. Hence, safeguarding data from online attacks or unauthorised access becomes a primary goal. In short, cybersecurity is of prime importance. While there are new emerging technologies, there are new threats like data breaches, ransomware, and social engineering attacks you need to look out for.

Here is a list of cybersecurity trends that can be emerging technologies or threats in the cybersecurity landscape.

Emerging Threats In Cybersecurity Landscape

Here is a list of emerging threats in the cybersecurity landscape you need to look out for:

The Automotive Hacking Will Rise

Today every vehicle is loaded with automated software for seamless connectivity for drivers in the:

  • Cruise control
  • Engine Timing
  • Door lock
  • Airbags
  • Advanced systems for driver assisstance

Such vehicles use Bluetooth and WiFi technologies to communicate. They open these vehicles to vulnerabilities or threats from hackers. Gaining vehicle control or automobile hacking will rise as the number of automated vehicles increases.

Mobile Will Be The Potential Target

Cybersecurity trends have seen a considerable increase in mobile banking malware or attacks since 2019. Handheld devices like mobiles are a potential prospect for hackers. Hackers find a way to get photos, financial transactions, emails, and messages. It is a threat to individuals.

Cloud Will Be Potentially Vulnerable

More and more organisations are established on the cloud now. Although cloud applications like Google or Microsoft are well-equipped with security from their end, the user end can act as a significant source of:

  • Erroneous errors
  • Malicious software
  • Phishing attacks

Hence, it’s necessary to monitor security measures and update them now and then to safeguard the data from leaking.

Data Breaches Will Be The Main Target

Data is one of the leading concerns for every organisation around the globe. Safeguarding digital data is now a primary goal for every individual or organisation. Any flaw in a system browser or software can be a potential threat, as it allows hackers to access the personal information of individuals.

Human error is also one of the primary reasons for the data breach. Any intentional loophole or bad day can bring down an organisation with millions of stolen data. Hence, it is crucial to create awareness within organisations to safeguard data.

Increase In Targeted Ransomware

Another cybersecurity threat you cannot ignore is targeted ransomware. Industries rely heavily on software to run their daily activities today. The ransomware threatens to publish the data of the victim, organisation or nation until they pay the ransom. It has the potential to affect large organisations or countries too.

Rise of Social Engineering Attacks

There is a rise in social engineering attacks today. Attackers use the following techniques to gain access to sensitive data:

  • Phishing
  • Spear phishing
  • Identity theft

Organisations should train employees to recognise and report suspicious activities to avoid these social engineering attacks.

Cyber Warfare Can Be A Threat Too

The tension between hackers from various nations often creates worldwide news. It leaves a significant impact on events like elections. Attackers have become increasingly sophisticated, and organisations should beware of these attackers. Hence, every organisation must have adequate security measures to protect against these attacks.

Emerging Technology In The Cybersecurity Landscape

While there are emerging threats, the following emerging technologies in the cybersecurity landscape will also help in navigating those threats:

The Potential of AI Will Uncover

Today AI is being introduced in every market segment. AI and machine learning has transformed the cybersecurity landscape. AI is also crucial to build systems with face detection, automated security systems, language processing, and threat detection. One can use it to develop malware and attacks to bypass the security protocols to control data, but it can also predict new attacks and notify data breaches instantly.

IoT with 5G Network Will Be A Part of The New Era

The world will see a new era of interconnectivity with the Internet of Things (IoT) with the advent and growth of 5G networks. While this communication between various devices opens them to vulnerabilities and needs research to secure these devices but using strict sophisticated 5G hardware and software can control data breaches.

Blockchain Will Help Improve Security

Blockchain is a distributed digital ledger technology that allows secure, transparent, and tamper-proof transactions without a bank or government. While security issues such as hacking, fraud, and theft of digital wallets are a concern, here are its three main benefits:

  • It improves security in various industries like finance and healthcare
  • It provides a secure way of storing and transmitting data
  • It makes it difficult for attackers to manipulate data

Quantum Computing Can Make A Difference Too

Computer technology based on the principles of quantum theory is called Quantum computing. It is different from classical computing and can exist in zero and one state at once due to the principles of superposition and entanglement.

While quantum computing has the potential to break encryption algorithms currently used to secure data, they can perform calculations exponentially faster than classical computers. These calculations can make encryption algorithms more secure and make it harder for hackers to decrypt encrypted data.

Let’s Wrap Here!

Infrastructure security is a significant part of every organisation today. While digital connectivity and emerging technology generate extensive opportunities today, it creates new opportunities for threats to inflict damage. Whether it’s the abuse of the Internet of Things (IoT) or exploiting vulnerable supply chains, the cybersecurity threat landscape is an open ground for sophisticated attackers. Hence, every individual, organisation, and nation should build advanced cyber defences to mitigate these attackers.
